Minister’s Musings… First, pardon this article’s spacing, etc, as this is the first attempt on my new computer (the older, more reliable one, was stolen from my office). Linda will, I am sure, make it look as nice as possible (with Bob Heinley’s assistance!). I am rather distraught over the news regarding another murder (this time of a pregnant woman), and the continued loss of life in the Iranian struggle. It doesn’t “make sense” to me. If we are truly the people of God should we not be looking for peaceful solutions to our disagreements? Alas, we are much more spiritually weaker than we think! May God forgive and strengthen us on our path. As a result of this IIdistraught-ness” it seemed appropriate that our hymn of the month reflect an overpowering hope for a life filled with love, joy, hope and grace. This hymn, Down by the Riverside, meets the need. It comes to us from our sisters and brothers who understood oppression and yet could continue to rejoice in God’s prevailing hope for war to end and IIpeace to break out” around this creation. May we help God in ushering in an age of peace as we go about our summer and our lives. May we be the instrument that can turn sword and shield into plowshares and pruning hooks. May we be the holy and faithful followers of Jesus Christ who came to transform this world into a “new creation” of love and peace. May we, borrowing from the military, be all that we can be! Minister’s Musings … “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, 0 Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Although my remembrance of these words is not truly accurate the ethos contained salves my mind and heart. This is one of the “mantras” I pray before entering the sanctuary on Sunday morning, an Administrative Board meeting, Elder’s meeting, DHM Board meeting, even a meeting of our City Council. “Let the words of my mouth … ” is powerful. I am invoking God’sparticipation in my thinking and actions and that is definitely powerful.. Imagine my lack of humility and humbleness to believe that God would participate in my actions. Wow! However, I do believe that the spirit of God is present in all of us and willing to assist us when we ask and listen for a response. I hope I am “preaching to the choir.” We all share the opportunity to respond to God’s calling upon our lives with our talents and gifts, with our actions and words. So, don’t most of us think that God can make a difference in our lives and actions? Don’t most of us believe that there is a “spark” of God within each one that allows us to be conscious, aware, and open to God’s leading? Ifwe do not, it does not make us “bad” people. It may mean that we must examine and determine how we can be open to God at all times, in our homes and in our cars, in our jobs and in our worship, in the entirety of our lives. May we strive to be the good and whole people of the God we know in Christ Jesus. Alan |
