Minister’s Musing … God so loved the world that we were given God’s only begotten Son. Jesus traveled, taught by word and example, was beaten, crucified, and placed in a tomb. What a sorry ending for the Son of Man! But, my friends, something never before imagined took place. He arose and came among us again. He later ascended to God leaving us with these words from Matthew’s Gospel, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt 28:20b). That image and those words are very much a part of the core of our faith and belief. We acknowledge and accept a risen Lord and Savior, AND, we acknowledge his continual presence with us. He did promise an Advocate, a Holy Spirit would be sent from God as witness to his life and presence among us. During July we remember those who gave their lives for the independence and freedom of our country. We remember those who served and serve in our armed forces as they continue to represent our common values. We set off fireworks, bbq, swim, and enjoy the good life we have assumed to be ours. And, we do it with gusto! All of this is well and good. All is appropriate if done out of our faith and commitment to what Jesus truly taught, shared, and lived while among us. Therefore, I end this “Musing” with words that are most important to be in our very DNA make up. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Mt 22:37-40). If we can live and love this way ….
